What's on Disc by Thomas Schulte

TECHNO

* Do not miss the domestic release of KISS MY ARP (Mo' Wax/Beggars Banquet). This is the first in a series of recordings made possible by a new partnership between Beggars Banquet and Mo' Wax. DJ, composer, singer and producer Andrea Parker mixes deep, trip-hop grooves with film score-style orchestrations. Her music is dark and evocative. Expect the evening to be one of unforgettable audiophile electronica.

Boukman Eksperyans
LIVE AT RED ROCKS
Tuff Gong

This is Boukman Eksperyan first live album and is recorded at the United States' premier outdoor venue, the Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado. The ten-piece reggae ensemble calls itself "vodou roots." Mixing African roots into their big band reggae makes for powerful and entertaining listening. Lead vocalist Theodore "Lolo" Beaubrun, Jr. used the event as a platform for expressing the group's social consciousness. These monologues are preserved here as introductions to the songs. It is interesting to note the guitar backbone to this band. Guitarist Maquel Jean-Baptiste cuts through the layered ethnic percussion with strong leads and hard rock rhythms. This riff and lead guitar element gives Boukman Eksperyans more substance than many world music ensembles besides making them more palatable to the Western ear. (3)

Tara Vanflower
I THIS WOMB LIKE LIQUID HONEY
Projekt

Tara Vanflower is a Gothic song stylist. Languidly and hauntingly she draws out the verses to her songs with much inspiration from medieval chanting. For example, the title track alternates between a spoken and chanted delivery over a simple, echoing backing that suggests high roofed cathedrals. Tara is responsible for all the sounds and voices we hear on this moody, dark album. She takes her lyrical content from the Old Testament and psychological imagery of nightmares and infancy. The album begins the appropriate of the theme from a children's rhyme. In a scary movie, the isolated rendition of such a charming tune turns up the creepy factor. So on I THIS WOMB LIKE LIQUID HONEY the simple melodies that would be endearing in a nursery school setting take on ethereal and sinister proportions produced by the icy chanteuse of evil synth pop, Tara Vanflower. Papa Boa
TETE A QUEUE DAME
4508 avenue de Lorimier, Montreal QC, H2H 2B5, Canada http://www.cam.org/~dame_cd
dame_cd@cam.org

Papa Boa explores the art of noise, and speaks French while doing it. This art-punk free jazz arises from group improvisation later torn about and reassembled into a Frankenstein audio collage. TETE A QUEUE juggernauts about like an unruly creation. Rock- and R&B-like rhythms emerge in the sometimes-harsh finished product. Making up the group is guitarist Bernard Falaise (Farniente Salon, Miriodor), percussionist and wacky brass band drummer Remi Leclerc (l'Orkestre des Pas Perdus, Miriodor), bassist and keyboardist Frederic Roverselli and Pierre Labbe on saxes, flutes and didgeridoo. Numerous guests form the Montrela musique-actuelle scene help out. Salient in these collaborations is the dulcet voices of actress-singers Marie-Helene Montpetit and Marie-Jo Therio singing in French. The juxtapositions of these mellifluous tones in that beautiful language against the alternating rhythmic or abrasive constructions pull it together. (4)

    Wende Bartley
CLAIRE-VOIE
DIFFUSION i MeDIA, 4487 rue Adam, Montreal, QC H1V 1T9

Wende Bartley has worked alone and creatively in the electroacoustic field. This Toronto-based composer here presents pieces composed for female voice and tape. Composed from 1985-1993 these four pieces explore the chthonic, mysterious aspects of the female psyche centered on phases of the moon. Mezzo-soprano Fides Krucker features prominently on "Ellipsis" singing, wailing and summoning the spirits of Selene. Haunting and otherworldly, Bartley's is a ballet for lithe shadowy figures emerging from the mist. Further shrouded in disembodied voices caught on the tape, the sisterhood spins slowly in moonlit ancestral worship. (4.5)

    Three Finger Cowboy
HOORAY FOR LOVE
Daemon Records, POB 1207, Decatur, GA 30031 http://www.daemonrecords.com

Three Finger Cowboy is four people having fun with rock and roll. They are partly Velvet Underground derivative and partly giddy on indie rock. A squeaky voiced pixie named Katherine McElroy (who sounds partly like Juliana Hatfield and partly like Moe Tucker) fronts the group as it romps the rock without fear of cute, they are proud but not hard. Their fun frolic with rock instruments is about living a teen dream. Three Fingered Cowboy keep close to a pure, childish spirit than an FM radio dial. Three Finger Cowboy is a winner on all counts as the most fun bubblegum garage pop bands out there.

    My Scarlet Life
INFRARED
DivaNation Records, 5602 N. Ridge Rd., Chicago, IL 60660 http://www.MyScarletLife.com
DivaNation@aol.com

INFRARED is My Scarlet Life's most produced effort yet. The arrangements are lush, rich in texture and studio dynamics. The core gems in the sonic jewelry of magnificent artifice is My Scarlet Life vocalists Julie Axis and Christy C. Smith. Their harmonies, multi-tracked and ornamented by track-meister Preston Klik (Big Hat), become a garden of sonic delights. There's no angel with a flaming sword at these gates, just siren-angels inside, so come on in and share in a little heaven on earth. (4)

    Mary Lee's Corvette
TRUE LOVERS OF ADVENTURE
Wild Pitch Records, 89 Fifth Ave., NYC, NY 10003 http://www.wildpitchrecords.com http://www.maryleescorvette.com/

Sophisticated wordsmithing and rich instrumentation have made Mary Lee Kortes an indie pop darling of the press. Tender ballads about the "Lost Art" of love and rockers like "One More Sun" feature such poetic lines as "I'm tossing my old emotions/'Cause I've heard you can't find new oceans." Showcasing these excellent lyrics are arrangements featuring exotic and subtle percussion, accordion, piano and other keyboard instruments and cello. Not to be overlooked is Mary Lee's mellifluous and dulcet voice; a real shining gem among singer-songwriters. (4)

    Dominique Gizelle
DOMINIQUE GIZELLE
Bang On! Records, Bellmore, NY, 1170 http://www.bangonrecords.com
info@bangonrecords.com

One of Dominique Gizelle's gifts is a rich, deep voice that sounds like an excellent vehicle for the Blues. Dominique uses this talent to be a Annie Lennox or Rickie Lee Jones of the indie scene. For female singer-songwriters, I must come across a dozen new names and releases each week. Dominique stands head and shoulders above the rest for possessing real vocal ability - awesome technique and strong, emotional delivery. (4.5)
