On this limited edition, red vinyl 45, the Gore Gore Girls present their ultimate tribute to girl groups. Made a Number One hit by Little Eva in 1962, "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" comes off the Gore Gore Girls release Strange Girls. These Detroit ladies learned "I'm Gonna Get You Yet" from the Dixie Cups and it is a preview of Up All Night. (4.5)

Gore Gore Girls
Up All Night

The three ladies that are the Gore Gore Girls serve up lickety-split garage rock with a warm bass line rousing group vocals. Psych rock that you can dance to, Up All Night is a hot platter that mixes in smart R&B. This is best exemplified in the handclap, organ and drum rhythms to their take on "I Don't Think So," made famous by The Shirelles. Easily accessible, there is true pop style in the killer hooks and upbeat delivery here. (3.5)

The C. O. C. O. Sound
K Records
http://www.krecs.com

The C. O. C. O. duo is Chris Sutton, Dub Narcotic Sound System bassist and Olivia Ness. In this project Olivia plays the bass and Chris the drums. This, their second album, is crisply cool mechanical beat music with simple lyrics. This is dance music the way that Kraftwerk is. The bare, sparse use of bass and drums makes the pair a sturdy, robot-funky rhythm machine. (3.5)

Intractable
28 Days Records http://www.28daysrecords.com http://www.ginayoung.com

Former Moxie manager Nancy Scibilia restarted Moxie's 28 Days Records as a label about "music created by grrrls." They have a well-suited artist who tosses profanity and her overt Lesbian politics into the songs on Intractable. This activist-singer dishes out cutting and witty and personal songs with a hip post-folk style that earns her comparison to early Ani DiFranco. The combination of intelligent observation and punk attitude (Some songs, like "Surrounded" are themselves punk) is a winning combination of hooks and focused angst from this radicalized singer-songwriter. Rocking rebellion and articulate anti-establishments attacks make Intractable fully successful political rock. (4.5)

Inside Looking Out
Sideshow Records

This is the second CD from the Portland, Oregon singer-songwriter. Still Marie is no unsophisticated newcomer. Her rich, earthy vocal style is high matured and adds depth and feeling to her folk rock and blues-tinged pop rock. This versatile vocalist was musical director of a cappella ensemble Harvard-Radcliffe Opprtunes as well performing in jazz (John Mariz Trio) and R&B (The Big Picture) settings. On tracks like "Again" she effectively exhibits a majestic, grandiose approach that has not been common since the '60s. (3)

    Lis Harvey
Topography
Erlendahle Records
POB 369, Hampton Falls, NH 03844
http://www.lisharvey.com

This CD was recorded during Lis Harvey's 2002 Spring Tour. The tracks are taken from two gigs: University of Alaska (Fairbanks, Alaska) and A Room of One's Own (Madison, Wisconsin). In addition and making for a baker's dozen of her crisp, ebullient folk-rock, is two other live selections recorded in 1999 at Spring Hill Tavern (Portsmouth, New Hampshire). These are previously unreleased songs and indeed the entire CD is mostly new material. Harvey's delivery recalls Diana Ah Naid as well as early Ani DiFranco. Alone on stage with her acoustic guitar, Harvey delivers her personal and compelling songs with warmth. This belies none of what she was also seeking to accomplish. On her Fifty State Tour kicking off August 15, Harvey will perform solo concerts in each of the 50 states of the U.S. in 61 days to set the Guinness World Records mark for "Fastest 50-State Tour by a Solo Female Musician." Guinness World Records had confirmed for her that no one yet held that record. (4)

    Patrice Williamson
Free to Dream
River Lily Records

Talented jazz vocalist Patrice Williamson, only in her thirties at the time of this release, brings to the table such singing abilities as to bear comparison to the genre's shining matriarchs Ella Fitzgerald (for eloquent phrasing) and Sarah Vaughn (for crystalline clarity). The versatile alto presents her own songs along fun pop arrangements (Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein) along with other excellent covers without trodding the well-worn paths of the jazz standards. Selections on this album include "Celia" (Bud Powell) and an arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "Another Star" by co-producer and pianist Mark Shilansky. (4)

The Originals
ACME Brothers Records
http://www.susanandthesurftones.com

Few instrumental contemporary surf bands have a female front person, but Susan & The Surftones does. Here the group delivers the pipeline goods on an album of all originals. Like many surf bands of today, Susan et al mixes originals in with expected and unexpected covers live and on record. However, this album is purposefully to "set the record straight" that the group does produce original material. The album compiles the group's original material that has a vintage, garage-surf feel. This is due to the guitar sound - as much dirt and reverb - with Vox and Farfisa organ. The rhythm section is Bob Becker and Jim Fritz of The Brainwashers. (4)

Windblown Kiss
Projekt
http://www.projekt.com

Windblown Kiss marks a change in direction for duo Anji Bee and Love Spirals Downwards architect Ryan Lum. The pair leaves behind the shoegazer dream-pop formula for a more vocal approach. Anji Bee is not quite up to the jazz-vocal delivery, yet, but some of the les ambitious material is solid, as on "You Girl." This is a very effective cover of an obscure song from America. The two join in a few duets and Ryan shows himself to really be a crooner ("You are the Gun"). A bonus, unlisted track is a fun, vintage-sounding number with Anji providing kazoo. Anji calls this song "Old Kazoo Blues" and the songs Led Zeppelin produced from rural blues influences inspire it. She also says it goes over great live. Before this is discovered, though, such musical guests join the pair as Sean Bowey (Eden) on acoustic guitar and vocals, and Doron Orenstein (of Frescoe) on sax. Probably a one-time concept album paying homage to nostalgic music styles, this will long gleam as a special gem in the Lovespirals discography with its jazz-folk touched by flamenco and soul.     Audra Kubat
UNTITLED for now
Remedy Records
1490 Iroquois, Detroit, MI 48216

Inspired by Joni Mitchell, Audra Kubat produces warm and winning folk-pop with a mix of acoustic and restrained electric guitars. After the spare intimacy of Elixir, Audra chose producer Mike E. Clark (Insane Clown Posse, George Clinton, Big Chief) and his Funhouse Studios for the creation of UNTITLED for now. As one would expect, there are more musicians and a more developed sound but all of Audra's natural charm and authenticity is intact on this second successful solo record from Detroit's stunning and compelling folk Amazon. Shines like Silver
Cady Finlayson
http://www.violincaddy.com

In producing this record, Cady (pronounced "Caddy") seeks to document the American-Irish sound of fiddle music. Her warm and upbeat presentation of instrumental reels, work songs, jigs and more is directed toward appealing to all ages of a contemporary audience. Cady is deeply rooted in these traditions though and even a Celtic purist will appreciate her take on "For Ireland" and Turlough O'Carolan's "Planxty Irwin." Only a hard-hearted folk traditionalist could not smile and enjoy the world percussion fused onto the American folk songs "This Old Hammer" and "Streets of Laredo" that Caddy's mother sang to her. Cady is a top American fiddler with a Master of Music from Mannes College (New York City) and is a protégé of Brian Conway. (4)
