Dolores
Keane
Night Owl
Alula
POB 62043, Durham, NC 27715-2043
http://www.alula.com
Night Owl is Keane's opportunity to lend
her exquisite vocal gifts to contemporary arrangements of Celtic
classics. Keane is a world-renowned who began her recording career
at the age of five. Raised by the mavens of Sean Nos singing, Rita
and Sarah Keane, Dolores' gifts spring from the traditional. Here
she performs updated versions of such classics as "Dangerous Dance,"
"The Wind that Shakes the Barley" and "Ballyroan." Not recklessly
adventurous, these renditions receive gentle transformation. The
addition of acoustic bass, cello and the serene sound of Olwell
bamboo flute adds to these tracks. These guests add their ornamentation
around a core of journeyman Celtic musicians such as John Faulkner
(guitar and harmony vocals) and Eoin O'Riabhaigh (Uilleann pipes).

Nyree
Bare
Belle Records
http://www.nyree.com
As the title of this recording suggestion, Nyree
bares her soul on this personal, intimate recording. Like Tori Amos,
her instrument of revelation is the piano and an octave-leaping
voice. Expressively and skillfully played, the acoustic piano channels
Nyree's emotion. The dynamic and at times stunning vocal display
makes this album a work of art and talent. An ardent performer (700
shows in three years), Nyree is a rare and splendid talent. Her
music is truly compelling, truly personal and truly moves the listener
to sharing in her heartache and sensitivity. (4) |

Projekt
POB 166155, Chicago, IL 60616
I once read that the most universally accepted
sound as beautiful is the female voice producing a soft vowel sound.
Projekt goes for that basic fact by presenting a compilation of
groups with ethereal, female voices. At their most complicated these
groups offer what sounds like simple choral music for a few voices,
as in Stoa's "Maare Illucescend." Whether chant-like or chanteuse-like,
the vocals are gentle exhalations of Latin-sounding syllables. These
medieval vocalizations are another instrument blended into a dark,
ambient mix on these tracks. The compilation includes newly released
tracks from Black Tape for a Blue Girl and Mira. Other names present
include Switchblade Symphony, Lycia and Amber Asylum. (4) |
