Blue
Kite
Aleatoric
http://www.mp3.com/bluekite
Vocalist Liz adds a warm feeling to the hypnotic, proto-New Wave
style beats on this experimental pop album. Additional color is
added by such unique instrumentation as trumpet, flute and dark,
moody cello. Intelligent and sophisticated, Blue Kite offer's the
thinking man's alt-pop. The name of this album suggesting the aleatory
music of chance pioneered by John Cage and others, but there is
nothing merely serendipitous about these well-constructed, multi-instrumental
pop gems. (3) |

Monique Berry
Cantata Entertainment Group

Monique Berry is a budding vocalist delivering her songs in a personal
and intimate way. She moves toward contemporary pop sounds with
the production on this album. Her own inspirations are obviously
more classic than that. She herself cites Gladys Knight and Elton
John. Indeed, Berry is a disciple of pop soul and shows herself
on this debut to be growing into that genre. The presence of a cellist
on two of the tracks is especially exquisite as it works well with
her vocal range. (3) |

Cristina
Branco
Post-Scriptum
Harmonia Mundi USA,
2037 Grandville Ave., LA, CA, 90025
http://www.harmoniamundi.com
Cristina Branco gives us a moving, modern interpretation of the
fado music of Portugal. Sweet sadness and exquisite delivery mark
the debut US release of this premier fadista out of Portugal. This
album does contain some traditional fado, like "Primavera (Spring)."
Largely, though, Branco chose her own texts (often from the work
of poets) and her guitarist, Portugal's Castelo, provided the arrangement.
While these are devoid of the dramatic melodrama contained in the
traditional styles, they still affect the listener singularly in
Branco's contemporary style. (4.5) |

The brash pop songs on this record, fueled by a large, aggressive
guitar sound recalls 80's post-punk power pop. Vocals by Sara Weaver
add charm and complementing melody to the punchy rock tunes. Thus
complete with the requisite charm accentuating the hooks, these
three-minute guitar-pop numbers become hum-inducing gems. (3.5) |

Cecilia
et ses Ennuis
Mon Engin D'Enfer (7")
Telstar Records,
POB 1123, Hoboken, NJ 07030
Dressed in a tight outfit ready for a wild ride in her "gold engine,"
Cecilia lounges against her golden hot rod on the cover of this
EP. These graphics are in the style of '60's French EPs and the
primitive rock inside hearkens back to that era. The organ- and
sitar-fueled gems here are in the classic garage rock with a much
more traditional approach than the contemporary drag punk groups
inspired by that decade. (3.5) |
