PIANO LESSONS

* Some say Suzanne Cianni is the Mother of New Age. At least it was in a review of her romantic piano melodies that the description apprantly first appeared. Cianni is still doing her own music on her own label and her new album reminds me distinctly of Kate Bush. "Turning" is available form Sevent Wave Productions, 20 Sunnyside Ave., No. A-197, Mill Valley, CA 94941.

* The Satoko Fujii Orchestra finds Fujii leading fourteen excellent musicians from her piano. Her newest recording is "Jo" (Buzz). This gives you fifteen improvisers moving organically as a single unit in what seems impossible extemporaneous performance. Fujii's group paints an amazing canvas of acoustic free jazz sounds.

LANDMINE CAMPAIGN

* Sheryl Crow and Nanci Griffith right now tour of Cambodia and Vietnam with the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. They are there to see firsthand the injuries and mishaps caused by landmines. The VVAF's Campaign for a Landmine Free World focuses on this international problem. Crow and Griffith are lending their names to the effort as Princess Diana did before she died. Griffith is also part of the Concert for a Landmine Free World tour. The tour features Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Steve Earle.

* Several friends help Sheryl Crow on her latest release "Sheryl Crow and Friends Live from Central Park." Among the all-star lineup are Eric Clapton, Chrissie Hynde and Stevie Nicks. Crow covers all her radio hits: "Everyday is a Winding Road," "Leaving Las Vegas," "If It Makes you Happy" and beyond. The historical concert culminates in group jams on "The White Room" and Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues."

Dolly PartonDolly Parton
The Grass is Blue
Sugar Hill

Dolly Parton returns to her (bluegrass) roots with The Grass is Blue. A bevy of bluegrass masters join her in making this album possible. Master Dobro player Jerry Douglas is here, with mandolin maestro Sam Bush. The album starts strong with the spirited "Travelin' Prayer," penned by Billy Joel. This is a showcase for fiddler Stuart Duncan, playing on a century-old instrument once owned by Kenny Baker. Each track has exquisite harmony vocals to supplement Dolly's stellar performance. Covering the ground from fiery barnburners to moving ballads like Hazel Dickens' "A Few Old Memories," The Grass is Blue is a dynamic and flawless modern bluegrass album. (4.5)

Peregrine
Quarterstick,
POB 25342, Chicago IL, 60625

Peregrine is Tara Jane O'Neil's first solo record after spending years in such ultra-indie groups as Rodan, Retsin and The Sonora Pine. Here O'Neil shows a much more intimate portrait of herself than you probably picked up in the road of Rodan. The experimental quiescence of sonorous slow-pop project The Sonora Pine is a better starting point. Peregrine is melancholy and moving, beautifully lonely. This is the best sorrowful songwriting since Damon & Naomi's The Playback Singers (Sub Pop). O'Neil holed up with a guitar, bass, piano, thumb piano, a balalaika and some blues to do this album. First, she crafted these emotions into songs and played all the instruments. Then she joined in the studio guitarist Dan Littleton (Ida), noted jazz drummer Andrew Barker and violinist Samara Lubelski (The Sonora Pine/Hall of Fame). Together they put just enough instrumentation on these sparse songs to keep the emotion from being completely naked. (3.5)
