Musician Nancy Magarill is the type of artist that New York
City is known for - the kind who pushes her art to the limit. As
the recipient of ASCAP's Best Emerging Pop Singer-Songwriter
Award and a finalist in the 1998 Lilith Fair Talent
Search, Nancy is clearly a talent worthy of notice.
Her artistic endeavors haven't been limited to recording and performing.
Nancy was the host of NY's notorious Panty Party, a monthly
gathering of independent artists chosen by her and partners Ivy
Markaity and Pilley. The Boy With The Glasses,
a musical Nancy created, debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop.
Her most recent project is the launch of a new Web site, Labelfreeradio.com.
Experiencing frustration over the limitations of commercial radio
and the music industry, Nancy came up with the idea for Labelfreeradio.com.
"From being a co-host of the Panty Party, I realized that there
are so many wonderful artists that people will never hear because
the labels want to sell what they think will sell, so I created
Labelfreeradio.com to help people find better music. I want to help
provide an alternative," says Nancy.
Labelfreeradio.com offers music segments through various channels
separated into genres, as well as specialty channels like our very
own WOMANROCK.com Channel. "It's a site where people can
go to listen to ½ hour shows of independent artists," says Nancy.
Unlike many other Web based radio sites, not everyone will be played
through one of Labelfreeradio's music channels. "We're being very
selective about what we put up. It won't be like MP3.com
where there are so many, it's hard for new artists to get heard,"
says Nancy.
Nancy Magarill has 3 releases to her credit: Nancy Magarill
& The Heard, Nancy Magarill, and Dancin' with the
Ghosts. She also contributed a track to It's About
Eve.
Nancy can be heard as part of the upcoming installation,
Night Vision, which will be exhibited at the White
Columns Gallery this month (June 2002).
