SPOTLIGHT SXSW 2001

Me First
Me First

Me First is a melodic rock band, sprinkled with punk glitter. They've been compared to bands such as the Muffs, the Runaways, the Ramones, and the Pretenders.

Helen Williamson; drummer of Me First.

WOMANROCK:

Are you an independent artist or are you signed to a label? Have you played at SXSW before?

HELEN:

Our latest album is on Sympathy for the Record Industry, an indie label. Our previous endeavors have been put out by Broken Rekids, another indie label. This was our very first time at SXSW.

WOMANROCK:

How did your show go at the conference? Sound? Light? Gear? Venue?

HELEN:

Our show was fine. Lighting and sound were about what they usually are. Being the drummer, I'm used to poor sound on stage, and it was about par for the course. The Ladonnas from Denver were gracious enough to loan us their amps and drums (thanks, guys!).

WOMANROCK:

Who was your favorite act at SXSW 2001?

HELEN:

Superdrag. They have great songs that are catchy as hell, and they rock.

WOMANROCK:

What, if anything, did you learn from going to the panels this year?

HELEN:

Since that involved getting up in the morning, I passed on the panels. I'd rather play music than talk about it, anyway.

WOMANROCK:

What did you hope to get out of going to SXSW? Did the conference meet your expectations?

HELEN:

I hoped to see other bands I'd like that I may not otherwise be able to see, and I hoped to promote the band. In both instances, I think it was moderately successful.

WOMANROCK:

What are your plans for 2001? New Record? New Label? Cyber heroine?

HELEN:

We are planning to record some of our new songs in late April, and we will probably record more later in order to put out another album. We will also be having the world's largest garage sale to earn enough money to buy another van, since ours became terminally ill last tour.
