WOMANROCK.com sent staff writer Magdalin Leonardo and photojournalist Debra Rothenberg out to chronicle the final tour of Lilith Fair. The following text and photos are a testament to the great power of women, of music and the sense of community surrounding the three year touring event. - Brenda Kahn

When Lilith Fair ‘99 rolled into the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, on Saturday, August 7, I had no idea what to expect. After attending last year’s sold-out concert in New York, my expectations were high, but I still had my doubts. Could the much-heralded, much-maligned Lilith Fair live up to its larger than life reputation? Would Lilith’s last stand be a good one?

Chrissie HyndeAfter two days, I had accumulated enough T-shirts, non-profit flyers and promotional freebies to fill a small briefcase. But the memories I made would be much harder to contain. As soon as I returned home to New York, I called just about everyone I knew to brag about the experience—and I regretted selling my tickets to Friday’s show. Sarah McLachlan’s third and final Lilith Fair was even better than last year’s, and the addition of Sheryl Crow and The Pretenders had everything to do with it. I became an instant fan of indie artists Rachael Sage, Splashdown and Melky Sedeck. I got a rare glimpse of Canada’s Bif Naked and Norway’s Bertine. But the best part of Lilith Fair ‘99 would be the unexpected.

Sheryl Crow and Sandra BernhardFrom the mouth-dropping discovery that comedienne Sandra Bernhard can sing (and sing well!) to seeing my own friend Brenda Kahn share the stage with her long-time idol, Chrissie Hynde, Lilith Fair ‘99 was filled with fun and surprises. I heard thirteen bands in two days. I had front row seats for nearly every performance. I got my very own “Girls Rule” tattoo and some ChickClick glitter sunscreen. Who cares if the Lilith Fair-grounds are closing? The talented women and causes it celebrated will go on.
