Above:
Saffron from Republica. Here's a band I haven't
heard much about in the years since they had their big hit but
I've always loved the photo. It's a live shot that almost looks
like something she posed for.
Amanda
Rootes, lead singer from Harlow. I photographed her
at SXSW in Austin a couple years ago in the midst of the VH1 Bands
on the Run.
Hilary
Woods, the very photogenic bass player from jj72, an
Irish band Rolling Stone was calling the next big thing for a
little while. They have a kind of retro-Joy Division sound. She
recently quit the band and I kind of wonder if it's partly because
of the huge amount of attention she was getting from the British
Music press. I think she really didn't enjoy being in the limelight.
Below
left: Cat Power. Chan Marshall was actually tuning
up during this shoot. Despite how calm she looks, she was stressing
out pretty seriously over losing her tuner & I think she was
listening for someone upstairs to hit notes on the piano for her.

Above
right: Christina Martinez of Boss Hog. I find this
shot to be a little creepy but I still like it. She was quite
intense and the band was in a big hurry (I had about 10 minutes
total for shooting the whole band) but I think her personality
comes through despite the rush job.
Tift
Merritt is an alternative Country & Rock singer from North
Carolina who I've gotten to know a little through photography
in recent years. She's a great singer in the Emmylou Harris &
Maria McKee tradition. I can't wait to hear her new album, which
should be out on Lost Highway this summer.
Below:
Kristin Hersh and Throwing Muses are a longtime
favorite of mine. Because of a connection they had with the program
director at the long gone REV105 radio station in Minneapolis,
I was fortunate enough to see and shoot them several times over
the years.
Above:
The Kills. Possibly my favorite new band of 2003. She goes
by the moniker of VV and she's an incredible singer.
Milla
Jovovich. Obviously well known model and actress. When her
CD showed up at the little indie rock 'zine I was shooting for
we all laughed, expecting the next lame model-wants-to-be-a-rock-star
dance pop but then we were all surprised to hear this sort of
Euro-folk, slightly Kate Bush-esque music that was really
strong. She also did an interview with us consisting mostly of
comparing McDonalds with Tommy's Chili Burgers.
Below:
Curve. I always thought Toni Halladay was sort of
the ideal female rock singer. She and her partner in Curve, Dean
Garcia never made it really huge here in the U.S. but I thought
they should have. This shot is from their '94 tour.
Patti
Smith. This was in Austin a few years ago too - this time
on the big outdoor festival stage. She's a legend and she does
indeed rock.
And
finally:
Street Musician, New Orleans, 1990.
This is an old favorite of mine. For years I've loved photographing
street musicians in various cities I travel to. New Orleans is
as good as it gets.
