LAUREN HOFFMAN

HER CAREER

Lauren Hoffman - photo by Geoffroy de Boismenu for SPINI am in the process of promoting my second record. My first, "megiddo" came out on Virgin Records in 1997.

HER SUPPORTERS AND INFLUENCES

David Lowery, who put up studio time and started producing me on spec when I was first getting started, and my dad, who encouraged me to write and play guitar when I was 13. My influences mostly are Elliott Smith, John Lennon, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, Zeppelin, Mozart, the Cure, Sinead O'Conner... there are too many to mention really, but that will do for now.

ABOUT HER RECORD LABEL

It's called "Free Union Records". I started the label with the money and the masters that I got back from Virgin when I left (very generous of them). I started it because I wanted to take the pressure of major corporate bottom lines off of my quirky little songs. because I wanted to have FUN again, and to support music that I LIKE instead of what fits the lowest-common-denominator.

ABOUT MP3

I am still on the fence. sometimes I get e-mails from people who say that they have all of my songs on their computer on MP3 and promise to buy the record when they can... I'm glad that they like the music, and I'm glad that they can hear it even if they can't afford it, but i hope that it won't make it even harder for indie bands to make their mark.
